Louisiana Child support calculator is calculated using the income shares only method. Payments are determined by the total income of the parents as well as the number of eligible children. Typically, more children or a higher combined income lead to higher payments.

Louisiana Child Support
Child support cases in Louisiana can be categorized into one of three groups: intake, collections, or parent locate.
You can get help locating a non-custodial parent, requesting a paternity test, making a child support order, and enforcing child support orders through Support Enforcement Services (SES), a branch of the Office of Family Support.
Here is a list of some of the services that SES provides:
Locating non-custodial parents
The SES must have knowledge of the non-custodial parent’s whereabouts in order to establish a child support order.
Through a variety of methods, the SES can assist in finding a missing parent and/or obtaining back child support payments. These consist of:
- The Federal Parent Locator Service is a database that lists parents who are employed by the federal government, receiving veteran’s pensions, or both.
- Electronic Parent Locator Network: this database of data allows you to look for absent parents anywhere in the United States.
- U.S. Treasury Department: If you are qualified, you may be able to acquire a full-service Internal Revenue Service collection for a charge that will assist you in obtaining unpaid child support.
Establishing a support order
Legally, both parents are required to provide financial support for their children.
The rules for calculating how much money is needed from the non-custodial parent to maintain his or her child(ren) are determined by the courts. These recommendations depend on a variety of variables, such as:
- The number of kids living there
- Both parents’ combined earnings
- Childcare expenses
- Health insurance costs
- A reserve for unplanned expenses
Enforcing a child support order
If the non-custodial parent is not honoring his or her financial duties, SES can assist in enforcing support orders.
The SES can punish—and make an effort to collect payment from—delinquent non-custodial parents by income assignment, intercepting state and federal tax refunds and lottery winnings, suspending licenses and registration, refusing passports, and requesting a charge of contempt of court.

How Child Support is Calculated in Louisiana
The proportion of each parent’s income that is transferred also affects the transfer amounts. Non-custodial parents with significant salaries are Louisianians who pay the greatest support.
The biggest beneficiaries are parents with primary physical custody who are also low-income and high-earning payers.
Since Louisiana doesn’t have a clear procedure for modifying payments for the precise amount of parenting time each parent gives, we refer to the practice as “income sharing only.”
As is customary with income-sharing arrangements, the rules do not include a specific description of the parent’s portion of childcare time.
A table is used to determine the fundamental child support obligation in Louisiana. The chart is made available online by Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services. The table can appear to be fairly simple.
But you must be aware of how much “combined adjusted monthly gross income” there is. You must first calculate your monthly gross revenue in order to do it.

Louisiana child support can be affected by parenting time totals
The calculation of child support in Louisiana is solely dependent on income. The calculation does not account for parental leave.
When the nonresidential parent’s visiting time substantially exceeds what is deemed typical, the court may in some circumstances divert from its tight child support rules.
If this applies to you, precise parenting time calculations have a direct impact on your child support obligation. To determine how much you will owe or receive using this calculation, use the calculator above.
Most parenting time totals are estimates (and thus incorrect)
Because it is tedious and time-consuming to calculate parenting time in Louisiana, attorneys and courts frequently rely on estimates of parenting time, even when they are inaccurate. These projections are frequently used by divorcing parents as well.
When compared to your actual parenting time schedule, your parenting time totals will be incorrect if you used estimates. As a result, your child support payment will not be reasonable or accurate.
How to calculate parenting time instead of relying on estimates
Software is the fastest and most precise method of calculating parenting time. Without software, adding up hours for a whole year by hand is required, which is error-prone when taking into account alternate holidays, summer vacation, and other scheduling adjustments that occur throughout the year.
